How To Make Sure You Have The Correct Motherboard Drivers

Motherboard drivers are an essential part of your computer system. The motherboard is right at the heart of the operation of your entire machine, and all of the other key components are completely dependent upon it. In the past, if a motherboard was faulty, it made sense to try and have a repair carried out on it. Now, due to the complexity of motherboards, and their relative cheapness, it invariably makes more sense to replace a damaged motherboard than to try and repair it. If the motherboard itself is sound, the problems you are experiencing may be due to the motherboard drivers.

In order to locate and obtain the correct drivers for your motherboard, you first need to identify the manufacturer and model number of the board. To do this, there are several software based solutions. One of the most obvious is the one which Windows provides as part of the operating system. Windows System Information utility, or msinfo32, can be used to discover specifications of installed software and hardware. Use a software solution if you can, to discover the make and model of your motherboard.

If this software based solution does not show you the make and model of your motherboard, you will have to make a physical inspection. This is something you only want to do as a last resort, as there is a degree of risk involved. If you don't have any paperwork which relates to your computer, and there is no other way of finding the answer, you will have to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks. To physically inspect a motherboard, you will need to remove any cables and hardware which are blocking access. The degree of risk is minimal, but it is there.

You can then try to find the chipset which relates to the motherboard. You may be lucky, and have the original CD which came with your motherboard or computer, which will contain the correct drivers. If so, you do not even need to worry about the chipset. If you don't have this CD, and have only just discovered the make and model of motherboard, you can find the chipset within the Windows operating system under 'System devices'.

Once the motherboard and the chipset have been properly identified, you can perform an Internet search to find the correct motherboard drivers. As with drivers for most hardware, the manufacturers will typically keep software downloads available long after a model has been discontinued. There is no point in not doing so, as the expense is minimal to zero. You should easily be able to locate the correct download, and begin to restore your system to an optimum working condition. You may need to restart your system before you get the benefit from your new motherboard drivers.
